Description
A beautiful North American native, the Eastern White Pine is a rapid growing, long-lived coniferous evergreen tree adding 2 feet or more in height per year reaching 50 to 80 feet tall when all grown up. It has an upright pyramidal form that eventually becomes more of a rounded pyramid with age. It is clothed in attractive and soft-to-the-touch bluish green needles to 5 inches long in bundles that provide a soft texture and cool color that draws the eye. When trees reach around 5 years of age they begin to produce very attractive cylindrical, copper-brown cones up to 8 inches long that hang downward from the stems. Eastern White Pine is an excellent specimen tree or addition to privacy screen plantings and responds well to pruning for use as an outdoor Christmas tree.
Note: In USDA Zone 8 of the South the Eastern White Pine will appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours. In Zones 3-7 it will handle full sun.
Wildlife Benefits
The Eastern White Pine supports the Imperial Moth and its seeds are a favorite of black bears, rabbits, red squirrels, and many bird species. The canopy serves as a shelter for many birds and small mammals.
Landscape & Garden Uses
A fast grower reaching 50 to 80 feet tall and 20 to 40 feet wide at maturity, the Eastern White Pine is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, in privacy screen plantings or along sunny to partially shaded woodland borders. Also responds well to pruning as an outdoor Christmas tree. A fine addition to native plant gardens, conifer gardens and wildlife gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Â 15 to 20 feet apart for privacy screen; 45 feet apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Eastern White Pine is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained acidic soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day. It prefers an acid soil ranging from 4.5 to 6.0 on the pH scale. Alkaline soils above 7.0 pH will result in yellowing foliage and poor health. As with so many other ornamental trees, a constantly soggy soil or wet can cause problems with the roots. responds well to pruning to control size or for shaping purposes such as for an outdoor Christmas tree.
