Description
A brilliant conifer which forms a lovely ball of gold, the uniform shape of the ‘Elmwood Gold’ Hinoki Cypress lends itself to many uses in the landscape: as an eye-catching specimen, in groupings, or as a colorful low-maintenance hedge. It features stunning soft and feathery sprays of bright yellow new growth that matures to golden-yellow with hints of white variegation. The foliage is burn-resistant, even in full sun. We’re not sure the ultimate size but in 10 years it has reached 6 feet tall and a little wider, so might reach 8 to 10 feet tall at maturity. Exceptionally low maintenance with no need for pruning, just plant and watch it grow, and glow!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and wide in a global form with bright golden-yellow foliage, the Elmwood Gold Hinoki Cypress is ideal for use as an eye-catching accent, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in sunny to lightly shaded rock gardens, conifer gardens and landscape borders. It also does well in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to Asian themed gardens, conifer gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing:Â Â 4 feet apart for solid hedge; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Elmwood Gold Hinoki Cypress is exceptionally hardy and easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Foliage color is more intense with more sun. Constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic. Avoid overwatering. In the absence of sufficient rainfall, provide only enough water to keep the soil damp to moist. Established plants are quite drought tolerant but will appreciate an occasionally watering during prolonged periods of dry weather. No pruning required however responds well to light shearing for shaping purposes.
