Description
Introduced in 2001 by Kim Hawks of Niche Gardens in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, ‘Kim’s Knee High’ is as popular as ever, for good reasons, and remains an all-time favorite in our gardens. She is a dwarf version of the North American native species adored for her shorter habit and long summer bloom. Kim’s Knee High begins blooming when her rigid flower stems are about 15 inches tall and continues to late summer, at which time the stems might reach 2 feet tall. The daisy-like coneflowers feature drooping, clear rose-pink to purple-pink petals surrounding large, pin cushion-like, coppery-orange central cones. The flowers rise above an attractive clump of coarsely-toothed, dark green leaves that are up to 6 inches long. Not only will you and your guests enjoy this floriferous beauty in the garden or as fresh or dried cut flowers, the butterflies, hummingbirds and other birds will as well. If spent flowers are left on the plant at the end of the flowering season, the dry black cones provide winter interest in the garden and also seeds for goldfinches and other birds. Drought, deer, heat, humidity, and poor soil tolerant…what more can we ask for in a flowering perennial plant?!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Kim’s Knee High Coneflower is ideal for use as an accent or in groupings in sunny perennial and woodland borders and garden beds. Also suitable for containers. A fine addition to butterfly, cut flower, cottage, wildflower, native and pink theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 1.5 feet apart for groupings; 3 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Kim’s Knee High Coneflower is very easy to grow. It is a highly adaptable plant that is tolerant of drought, heat, humidity and poor soil. It will grow in most any average soil that is moist to somewhat dry and well-drained. It flowers best in full sun but will also do well and bloom in part shade. We suggest a minimum of 5 hours of direct sunlight per day. Spent flowers can be removed through the long bloom season. That said, spent flowers/seed heads can be left on the plant for winter interest and to feed the birds.
Plant Long & Prosper!
